#Puyo tetris series
The series was originally spun off from a Japanese RPG, and the narrative aspect of the adventure series carried over to the match-four Puyo games. The idea of a comedy-driven story supporting a puzzle game might be novel to me, but for Puyo fans, it's par for the course. Kasanoff's sci-fi epic still sounds terrible, but somehow it pulls off the impossible: It builds an entertaining narrative from an abstract puzzle game. After a disaster like Pixels, how could anybody look at Tetris and think there was a narrative to tell? The game may be a classic, but the narrative potential of organizing falling bricks into horizontal lines seemed weak to me. An Xbox Series X copy of the game was provided to Screen Rant for the purposes of this review. When Larry Kasanoff said he was turning the world's most iconic puzzle game into a trilogy of science fiction movies, I was speechless. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is available on December 8 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Next: Tetris: What A "T Spin" Is & Why You Need To Learn How To Do It More new puzzle experiences or a focus on the Skill Battle system would have really done a lot to help things out, but just another round of the same modes and missions just can't generate the same excitement, leaving this version squarely in the very good, not great, category of Tetris titles. However, the majority of this fun is held over from the original release, and there's just not enough difference here to get returning fans overly excited over a new game. Worse still, the ability to change characters is buried layers deep in a settings menu, making it inconvenient to really take advantage of what the mode has to offer.įor those who have yet to experience the joy of Puyo Puyo Tetris, this sequel provides a lot of fun in its off the wall story and its in-depth multiplayer options. They're also merely another option on the menu in other modes. In the story mode, they're mostly saved for boss battles that don't feel more challenging than any other puzzle level. Skill battles are easily the best new thing that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, but it feels like a tertiary addition. A retro collection of translated releases by the masters of the form at Digital Eclipse would probably hit much harder than this iteration of a successful formula.Įlsewhere, the new Skill Battles add character-specific attacks to the puzzle battles, adding a layer of strategy straight out of Tetris Battle Gaiden.

It's great to see more characters from the mostly Japan-only world of Puyo Puyo dubbed into English, and it makes one wonder if there's not more Sega can do with the franchise now that it has some American exposure. The story itself isn't going to win any awards, but there's enough humor to be had to make it worth experiencing.

The story mode now features full voice acting that really sells the over-the-top silliness of the cast. What is added to the sequel is most welcome. Related: Super Mario All-Stars Joins Tetris 99 For Maximus Cup This Week

In many ways, this is the same Tetris mashup from all those years ago with a new coat of paint. Players can play single matches of either Puyo Puyo or Tetris or combine the two by either having both types of blocks on the same board or swapping between two separate games at random intervals. There's still a lengthy single-player mode that combines visual novel storytelling with various types of puzzle matchups. All the modes, characters, and even the menus return from the original. In 2020, as Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 must contend with a follow-up to Effect, it suddenly doesn't seem like the vital puzzle mashup it once was, though it remains fun in its own right.ĭeveloped and published by the Puyo Puyo team at Sega, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 feels very much like a retread of the original game with a few nice additions. Then, out of nowhere, Tetris Effect and Tetris 99 came out in a single year and proved that there was still plenty of ground to cover with just Tetris alone. Much like an aging fighting game, a crossover with another venerable brand of puzzler seemed like the next logical step. Way back in 2014, the original Puyo Puyo Tetris seemed like the logical next step for the block falling franchise.
